What is FIMR?

Governor Lawton Chiles established Healthy Start Coalitions to address the infant mortality rate in the state of Florida. At the Healthy Start Coalition of Osceola County, we’re part of that mission. One major way to do this is through the Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) project.

FIMR is a community-based effort aimed at addressing factors and issues that affect infant mortality and health disparities. It focuses on how things like money, culture, environment, and access to care can affect a baby’s chance of being born healthy. Preliminary data indicates there were 30 detal deaths and 39 infant deaths in Osceola County in 2023, highlighting the critical need for ongoing action and support.

FIMR reviews each case carefully to find ways to help more families have safe and healthy pregnancies. FIMR comprises two groups, the Case Review Team (CRT) and the Community Action Group (CAG).

The Case Review Team (CRT)

The CRT is a group of professionals from different fields, like doctors, nurses, and social workers. They look at unidentified/patient-blinded abstracted information from vital records.

The team reviews each case to understand what happened. Then, they share their suggestions with the Community Action Group (CAG) to help improve care.

The Community Action Group (CAG)

The CAG is made up of local leaders, parents, and people from health and community organizations. They work with the Case Review Team (CRT) to turn ideas into real changes that help improve the health and safety of babies and families in our community.

You can help too! Join a FIMR committee and be part of the work to improve birth, health, and development for families in Osceola County.
